Say What? ZTE U9810 Smartphone Appears in Leaked Image, Packing 4GB of RAM

The Chinese mobile industry seems to be some part of an ambitious circus act lately. We’re hearing lots of strange rumors from the region, like that Zopo phablet equipped with a 32MP camera, for example. It appears we have another funny rumor making the rounds.

According to GizChina, ZTE is diligently working on a phone powered by 4GB of RAM. That’s right, 4GB of Random Access Memory, not to be confused with ROM storage. Seriously what the…?

The phone is conveniently named the ZTE U9810, which is clearly the model number and not the commercial title. Hopefully, ZTE will come up with something a little more attractive if they do get this thing to market.

Before I drone on about what 4GB of RAM would or would not do for the performance of a device, let’s go over the rest of the rumored specs:

  • 5-inch TFT LCD Display
  • 1280×720 (720p) HD resolution
  • 1.7GHz dual-core processor (unnamed)
  • 4GB of installed RAM
  • 16GB of internal storage with MicroSD expansion slot
  • 13MP rear facing camera
  • 1MP front facing camera
  • Android 4.1 Jelly Bean
  • Approximately 150g (weight)
  • Size: 142mm x 71.5mm x 8.9mm

Looking at the rest of the specs, you’d never guess that ZTE is trying anything out of the ordinary here. Unless you consider the 13MP rear facing camera, but higher quality camera sensors seem to be a hot trend lately.

Keep in mind, none of this information is set in stone. In fact, it all came from a leaked image that clearly has no upfront source. It’s likely that the device doesn’t even exist, or that maybe there was a typo when the specs were listed. As we all know, spy photos and leaked images can hardly be considered the most authentic sources of information.

Getting back to that unusual amount of RAM, I will say it’s certainly appealing. The real question here is whether or not that much RAM would benefit the user. In the case of running a multitude of apps, more RAM is always better. I’m willing to bet that most consumers (not all mind you) don’t use their smartphone like it’s a powerhouse.

Also relevant to note, is the five band frequency support. As you can see from the image, the U9810 is rumored to support GSM, WCDMA, TD-SCDMA, FDD-LTE and TD-LTE all in one device. I would say it’s a pretty crazy feature too, although not quite as remarkable as the supposed RAM capacity.

What do you think? Sound off in the comments below fellow smartphone peers. I know my readers usually have something to say when it comes to performance, so let’s hear it!
