If you’re one of the few that owns a Sony NSZ-GS7 set-top box, then you’ll be happy to know that Sony is rolling out a software update that will introduce some new features. Namely, HBO Go support is finally here, about time, right?
Of course, there are the traditional performance improvements and optimization enhancements, but that’s to be expected. The desirable upgrades include Google voice search, PrimeTime Quick Guide and Amazon Instant Video support. There’s also the aforementioned HBO Go support.
One thing stands out here, and it’s the new Google Voice Search feature. As most second gen Sony Google TV owners know, there’s no microphone on the device. That being said, it’s hard to imagine how the voice search functionality is going to benefit anyone.
Sony is actually releasing an update remote control for the set-top that includes an integrated microphone. Unfortunately, that means you’ll have to pay an additional $50 to use that otherwise free voice search option, but hey beggars can’t be choosers, right?
The $50 dollar updated remote control, can be purchased through Sony’s online store. Unsurprisingly, it looks just like the last remote control albeit with a slightly different layout. If you want to use the Google Voice Search with your set-top you don’t have much of a choice though, do you?
The new update will bump the Google TV build up to version 3 if you genuinely care what the build number is anyway. Personally, I pay more attention to the new features and improvements in software updates.
The good news here is that existing set-top owners will be getting some much needed improvements. It’s gratifying to see Google, and Sony in this case, supporting the Google TV platform. I have no doubt that NSZ-GS7 owners will be happy about it too.
You don’t hear too much about the Google TV platform these days, especially with all the Android news at the forefront.
Calling all Sony set-top box owners, if you’re out there! What do you think of this news? Are you excited for the update? Did you move away from the platform a while ago? By all means, share your thoughts!
