T-Mobile indubitably came out swinging as CEO John Legere bashed the other leading carriers during a press conference, for their commitment to “crock of shit” two-year contract models. Even though, I don’t necessarily agree with some of T-Mobiles new ‘Uncarrier’ pricing plans, I do tend to support Legere in this matter. Two-year contracts should certainly be something of the past.
Unsurprisingly, Legere aimed most of his attacks at AT&T, a company that his own was ready to merge with not long ago. Legere attacked the idea that customers are paying hundreds more when they sign a two-year agreement. “This is the biggest crock of shit I’ve ever heard in my entire life.”
AT&T seems to be pretty nonplussed by the attacks. An AT&T representative responded to AllThingsD with a rather intriguing comment.
“Whatever.”
The other leading mobile carriers had something to say too, but they seem to be adamant about defending their current service offerings. In hindsight, it seems odd that AT&T was the one to act like they could care less. I would take Verizon to be the one to do that.
Instead, Verizon defended their plans and the size of their LTE network.
“Verizon Wireless customers have for years enjoyed the ability to purchase a phone at full retail price on month to month contract. Phones on our website are offered at full retail price as well as the discounted price to give customers a choice in how they purchase their mobile devices.”
Sprint, on the other hand, took the opportunity to point out that they offer “the best of both worlds.”
“Sprint gives its customers the best of both worlds with Truly Unlimited 4G LTE data on smartphones and the best value for customers with a savings of $110 over T-Mobile when comparing the total cost of ownership over two years for the 16 GB version of the Samsung Galaxy S III. In addition, true no-term contract options are available with Virgin Mobile, Boost Mobile and Sprint As You Go.”
I’m a little disappointed they didn’t bite back with Legere’s veracity, but at least they responded in some way.
No doubt Legere is laughing behind the scenes and calling his competitors some pretty uncouth names.
