AT&T have finally started to roll out the update to Android 4.1.2 for LG’s Optimus G for users that I’m sure were eager to get their hands on all the goodies the new version brings. AT&T didn’t make any sort of announcement before-hand, leaving users to discover for themselves.
At first, the update came to only a handful of handsets, leaving the others who were not so fortunate heading to the AT&T forums to complain. Many have asked, and with good reason, how could this update take so long to roll out, since users of the Nexus 4 (which is basically a Optimus G with the same hardware) had the latest 4.2.2 update available from February and the device launched with Android 4.2. We are accustomed to this lag that carriers have against Google’s devices when pushing the next version for devices, but it’s always weird to see that they take months for it when it’s fundamentally the same hardware. Nevertheless, it seems that now most devices are receiving the notification to update to Jelly Bean 4.1.2.
The update package is around 340 MB, so make sure to be connected to a reliable and fast Wi-Fi connection before attempting the update but, if you are among those with unlimited data plans, or at least a hefty data package, this might not concern you much.
So for those of you waiting to get Google Now (I’m still waiting to try it out) and other goodies, your wait is over. Even though it’s not the latest and greatest Android version, it’s still something to be happy for. At least it’s Jelly Bean 4.1.2 and not Ice Cream Sandwich 4.04.
If having the latest version of the OS is important to you, there is no better alternative for you than a Nexus device. That will mean you wouldn’t get a better price for the device by renewing your contract with the carrier, but then again it seems that Google’s plan is to offer them at a much lower price than what it would cost otherwise off-contract.
