Today, news has broken that Google has now hired Patrick Collister as their new head of design. He is replacing Irene Au who resigned last year. Last year in Irene’s blog post she was looking for a new entrepreneurial opportunity. Which we’ve seen countless times with Google employees. Most recently, Android’s Grandfather, Andy Rubin. She stated that she wanted to start on something new and she reflected on her work with Google. She was very proud of her work with the user experience team she created. So Irene left Google on top and on good terms.
Collister will have the same tasks that Irene had. He’ll be creating and fostering a great user experience. His main focus will be to engage advertising agencies and companies to use Google’s services like Google+ (which has been getting a major push lately) and YouTube. Collister was asked about his new job focus and stated “Loosely, we want to encourage major brands to spend more money online.”
Collister is going to be wrapping up his business, Creative Matters, and getting ready to start working for Google. His company focuses on consultation and training services. Patrick Collister is also the former Execytuve Director and Vice Chairman of Ogilvy & Mather, he’s also the creative Director for Havas EHS. Collister will be bringing lots of experience, relationships and knowledge over to Google which is always a good thing. Especially when you’re the new head of design for a company that has recently became known for how well their design is now. Google has been turning out some nicely designed apps, even ones that aren’t on Android. So Collister will have some big shoes to fill.
So Google lands another hire. I wonder how greatly their design will change under Collister? Personally I really like their current design scheme that they use on desktop, Android and iOS. It looks minimal yet very nice. What do you think? Let us know in the comments down below.
