One of my personal favorite services that Google offers is Google Music. I love the idea of having all my music in the cloud and being able to stream or download it all. And the best part about that is that it’s free! So how can they improve it? Well, we’ve seen numerous reports lately that Google is in talks with record labels to get a streaming service similar to Pandora, Spotify or iHeart Radio.
Also, just yesterday Google Music went live in a bunch of new countries. That included Austria, Australia, Belgium, Ireland, Luxembourg, New Zealand and Portugal. So Google Music is still growing, as it is one of Google’s younger projects. At this rate, I don’t see Google Music ending up in Google’s spring cleaning list like Google Reader did.
So back to that streaming thing. Yes you can already stream music with Google Music, but that is limited to music that you uploaded or bought from Google Play. This new service would allow you to create stations like you can in Pandora and stream just about anything. Now we don’t have a whole lot of details on this at this point. But the latest reports we’ve seen point to Google offering both paid and free subscriptions to their new service. Reports are also saying that Google is looking to launch this new service in Q3 which starts July 1st.
One thing I’d like to see change with Google Music is the app. Recently we’ve seen Google going to this Cards UI which is present in Google Now, Google Keep, the new Play Store and a few other apps. It looks really nice and I’d love for Google Music to pick up on that as well.
So that’s about all we’ve got for Google Music at Google I/O. We’ll keep digging around to see if we can find out some more information or some new features coming to Google Music.
