We’ve been hearing for some time now that the Google Play Store is to get a fresh lick of paint on Android and, starting today devices running Android 2.2 and above will start to see the new update rolling out to their devices. The new look and feel, that looks very much like Google Now, is being ushered in to deliver a simple and clean look to the Play Store that will help show off new content.
Google have also hinted at some “streamlining” to the manner in which we pay for things in the store, which we’d assume would mean less taps and more charging of your cards. It’s also going to get a little harder for us to escape recommendations as Google have detailed a change in how they are displayed, with more of them coming at you as you scroll down the page. This is the sort of thing that Google’s Play Store has been struggling with for a long time, there’s a lot of content in the store but, what if I just want more of the same? Well, now the Play Store will let you know.
The update is rolling out to both smartphones and tablets and, even if you’re still stuck on Gingerbread for whatever reason, the new design will be headed your way as well.
Over at Google’s Android Blog, there are some shots of the new store on the Nexus 4, 7 and 10, showing off what looks to be a new font choice as well as the updated Google Now card aesthetic. To me, it looks a lot cleaner but, I will have to spend some time with the new update to find out if it’s any “better” or not. I’ve tried to get the update on my Nexus 7 but, with Google saying it’ll be rolling out over the next few weeks, I might have to wait a little longer.
With smartphone displays hitting 1080p and tablets even higher, it’s a good move on Google’s part to make the content stand out more, while making sure to deliver a clean and easy to use store for all. Hopefully, the landing page on Android gets a clean-up and we get to play with the new update soon. Have you been lucky enough to get the update yet? Let us know!
