When I first heard of Google Glass, one of the initial things I worried about, besides how it would look on my oddly shaped face, is whether or not there will be a Twitter app for it (yes, there was sarcasm in that statement). Personally, now I’m more worried about the price because $1,500 is a lot of video games, and yes that’s how I assess the value of items- spoken like a true geek.
According to John Doerr from Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers’, Twitter is already working diligently on porting their social media experience to the Glass platform.
“Some companies we’ve backed, such as Twitter and Path, are already working on experiences for Glass. So are Evernote and The New York Times.”
Doerr identified that his group KPCB, is investing in startups that are working on generating content for the platform. It is part of a new investment called the Glass Collective from Andreessen Horowitz and KPCB.
According to Doerr, the CEO of Path, Dave Morin passed along this little tidbit to him:
Glass represents a future of freedom. A future where you spend more time focused on the people you are with and the experiences you are having, rather than focused on your mobile device. Glass brings you the important information, context, and moments when you need them most.
Last month as SXSW Google announced that content from Path, Evernote and the New York Times would be coming to the glass platform. The Twitter development is relatively new and has yet to be confirmed.
According to Doerr, he has believed, from the beginning, that Google Glass is going to help usher in a new generation of technology. He described the platform rather colorfully, as “eye-opening.”
“It also had the potential to create a brave new world of services and experiences.”
Seems like a lot of superfluous information and praise thrown in there just to reveal that Twitter is coming to the platform in a roundabout way. I suppose we should all be used to such tactics by now.
On another note, Google just announced that prototype Glass units will be shipping out to the Glass Explorers test group “within the next month.” Just in case you’re not already aware, that group is largely populated by developers, but also includes winners of the Glass competition from Google+ and Twitter.
