LG puffed out its chest today when it announced a shipping milestone of over 5 million LTE devices in South Korea over the last 18 months. To be fair, the milestone was reached in LG’s home market.
Their very first LTE capable device, the Optimus LTE, launched in October of 2011. If you do the math, which I hate doing, then LG has sold one LTE device every ten seconds during that time. That’s pretty crazy, but I’d like to see Samsung release stats like that for their own success.
As of now, LG’s LTE capable devices are divided into two different series labeled rightfully as the Optimus and the Vu.
In Korea, LG currently has 8 different 4G LTE capable devices available, including the Optimus LTE, Optimus LTE Tag, Optimus Vu, Optimus LTE II, Optimus G, Optimus Vu II, Optimus G Pro and Optimus LTE III.
Apparently, a third series is coming soon which will allow LG to broaden their horizons even further.
What will they come up with next? Will it be a phone equipped with an integrated corkscrew, because god knows some of us need something like that? Will it have a modern design like the HTC One? Will it be a phablet with a screen in excess of 40-inches? I’m sure plenty of juicy rumors will hit the airwaves soon, so I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
Back to the lofty milestone, LG appears to be quite smitten by their achievement. They stepped up and attributed their overall success to four pillars that the company has been specifically focused on, and no they are not pillars of salt. LG has strengthened their focus on the display, user experience, design and LTE technology all used in their devices.
They also made mention of a stronger patent portfolio. Could this be a new patent troll brewing beneath the surface?
This still doesn’t change the fact that Samsung is the leading smartphone manufacturer in Korea. LG has a long way to go if they want spot number one. In fact, they’re currently in a heated battle with Pantech for second place in the Korean smartphone market.
