Ever since Samsung showed off their flexible displays back at CES this January, we’ve been hearing rumors that it’ll be in the Galaxy S4. Then the Galaxy S4 was announced without a flexible display. So now we are hearing that it’ll be in the Galaxy Note 3. Today, ET News has said that the Samsung Display is currently facing difficulties related to “encapsulation technology.” They have bought patents related to encapsulation from Vitex System back in 2011. It appears that Samsung isn’t totally happy with what it got, since Vitex Systems technology “excessively lengthens the manufacturing time”. So Samsung Display is now looking for an alternative solution. So of course, this is going to delay your flexible displays.
The Galaxy Note 3 is supposed to be announced at IFA this fall in Berlin. It’s also supposed to have a 5.9-inch full HD display that might not be unbreakable or flexible. But it will be a big upgrade over the Galaxy Note 2’s display. We’ve also heard rumors that the Galaxy Note 3 is going to feature the Exynos 5 Octa with LTE support, 2GB of RAM, a larger battery than the Note 2, along with Android 4.2. Looks like no Key Lime Pie as of yet. We’ve also heard recently of an improved build quality for the Galaxy Note 3, which would be welcomed by many people who do not like Samsung’s current build quality.
So there you have it, looks like we won’t be seeing a flexible display on the Galaxy Note 3 this year. But what is the real use of having a flexible display? We saw some nice prototypes back at CES, but how useful would they be in real life? I’d love to have a flexible display on my phone or tablet, but just because the display is flexible, doesn’t mean the rest of the device will be. We’ll have to wait and see how all this goes down.
