Pantech's Vega Iron Official; Barely a Bezel in Site

You might know of Pantech as the company that gives AT&T their mid-range and budget-minded handsets but, in South Korea they’re a much bigger deal and they command more of a brand presence over there. Pantech aren’t known for announcing the best smartphones in the world, certainly but, they do bring out decent devices that have unique feature sets. At least compared to everyone else in the smartphone game. We’ve been hearing a little about the Vega Iron from Pantech and now, the device has been officially announced by Pantech.

The headlining feature of the device is that there doesn’t appear to be much of a bezel on this device at all. It comes with a 5-inch display – of the 1280 x 720 kind, unfortunately – and the front is dominated by that display and then some. Let’s be honest, you just want to know the specs of this before you hear anything else, right? Well take a look:

  • 5-inch 1280 x 720 Display
  • 1.7GHz Quad-Core Snapdragon 600 CPU
  • 2GB of RAM
  • 32GB of in-built storage, with support for microSD cards up to 2TB (yeah…where am I going to find one of those?)
  • 13 MP rear-facing camera, with 2 MP front-facing shooter
  • Bluetooth 4.0, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, LTE etc
  • 2,150 mAh Battery
  • Android 4.1.2

Aside from the design of the device having no bezel, there isn’t too much to set this apart from the HTC One and Galaxy S IV but, it certainly gives Pantech enough to go head-to-head, even the display is not a 1080p panel it has its own appeal. Especially in South Korea, which is going to be the target market for Pantech and the Vega Iron. It wouldn’t be a smartphone from South Korea without a function “borrowed” from Samsung, would it? Well, not to disappoint, Pantech have put in their “Gaze Recognition” technology which uses the front-facing camera to scroll through text and pause videos. Just like that other smartphone we’ve heard so much about.

There’s no telling whether or not the Vega Iron is to be sold outside of South Korea but, it’s a good device nonetheless and it could be the test of whether or not devices with little to no bezel are going to be popular throughout the year.

Would you buy the Vega Iron if you could?
