We all know that Samsung is perfectly fine with releasing somewhere close to a gajillion smartphones and tablets all with varying sizes and features but, Samsung might have taken things a little too far with the official announcement of the Galaxy Mega series. Of course, this all depends on how you view large devices, for some they’re brilliant and, for others they’re far too large to be considered practical. Regardless, Samsung see a market for these large, large devices and it’s a smart move to capture this emerging sector.
We’ve been hearing a lot about the Galaxy Mega 5.8 and 6.3 and all signs were pointing to them being more on the mid-range side of things and those rumors have today turned out to be correct, with Samsung announcing a pair of large-screened mid-range devices. Let’s take a look at them both here:
Galaxy Mega 5.8
As the name suggests, the Mega 5.8 is the smaller of the pair – yepp, 5.8-inches is the smaller of the pair – and it’s specs are pretty modest to say the least:
- 5.8-inch qHD -that’s 960 x 540 LCD display
- 1.4GHz dual-core processor
- 1.5GB of RAM
- 8GB storage with room for microSD cards up to 64GB
- 8-megapixel camera with 1.9-megapixel front-facing camera
- Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct withGPS, GLONASS, NFC and MHL
- IR sensor
- Size: 162.6 x 82.4 x 9.0mm
- Weight: 182g
- 2,600 mAh battery
- Android 4.2 Jelly Bean
Galaxy Mega 6.3
Here’s the real “mega” smartphone from Samsung, the positively enormous Galaxy Mega 6.8, with a screen size that’s not too far away from the Nexus 7. Specs are kept to a pedestrian level here as well:
- 5.8-inch HD -there’s no 1080p here, it’s a normal 1280 x 720 LCD display
- 1.7GHz dual-core processor
- 1.5GB of RAM
- 8GB storage with room for microSD cards up to 64GB
- 8-megapixel camera with 1.9-megapixel front-facing camera
- Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct withGPS, GLONASS, NFC and MHL
- IR sensor
- Size: 167.6 x 88 x 7.9mm
- Weight: 199g
- 3,200 mAh battery
- Android 4.2 Jelly Bean
So, there you have it, the two largest smartphones from Samsung yet. You all thought the Note II was big! There’s no word on pricing or availability just yet but, they shouldn’t cost anywhere near as much as the Galaxy S IV or the Note II, after all these aren’t devices that are aimed at the high-end. At least they shouldn’t be with those screen resolutions. Samsung seem to have modeled these two new devices after the Galaxy S IV and they’ve given the two devices a whole slew of features inside of Touchwiz, just like they did the Galaxy S IV. We’re not quite sure how well these devices are going to do but, judging by there polarizing form-factors, there can’t be too many buyers out there looking for smartphones this big. What do you think? Do Samsung have a pair of successful devices on their hands or not?
