Let’s be honest here. Even though Samsung does make an exceptionally good smartphone, the build quality of their devices leaves a little something to be desired. Sure, the Galaxy S4 will sell like hotcakes when it finally hits the market, and the same can probably be said about the Galaxy Note III when it finally arrives, but that says nothing about their physical design. Consumers always migrate to the latest and greatest, and right now Samsung is at the top of its game.
There’s no denying the fact that Samsung’s all-plastic design is less attractive than say the HTC One’s metallic casing. In fact, you can claim whatever the hell you want about HTC as a company, but the One is utterly stunning. The Galaxy S4 may have the hardware, but the One has all the looks.
Quite frankly, it’s about time we see something beautiful crop up in the Android world. While I would never pick up an iPhone for myself, it’s hard to deny the appeal in that combination of a glass and metal exterior. Maybe that’s why Apple fans are so starstruck with their products, most of them are lookers that is for damn sure.
Long story short, Samsung is starting to accept the fact that their devices could use some improvement in the exterior design department. Purportedly, Samsung was planning to develop the Galaxy S4 with a metal finish, but doing so would have resulted in a delay in the supply line. Rightfully so, Samsung scrapped the metal construction and went with the tried and true plastic casing.
SamMobile says that Samsung is worried about their devices stacking up with the competition in terms of build quality. They’re a little late to the party, I’ve been saying that for quite some time now and so have several others here at Android Headlines, namely our own Tom Dawson and Alex Maxham. Ask any one of us and we’ll tell you that Samsung’s design pattern sucks. If Samsung perfects the design, they’ll have the ultimate Trifecta of Android features which means they’ll probably dominate the market for an exceedingly long time. They already have the hardware and software right, if they nail down the design then I’ll admit right and here and now that they’d be nigh indestructible.
Rumors on the street point to a totally new and updated design for the Galaxy Note III. If that’s true, let’s hope Samsung decides to move away from the plastic design. Like I already said above, if Samsung can improve the overall build quality of their devices then it’s the consumers that are going to benefit from such measures. Unless of course Samsung decides to rack up the cost of their devices even more, let’s just hope they don’t.
For now, we’ll just have to make do with the Galaxy S4, not that it’s too much of a hassle.
