So much Babel lately. Just yesterday we saw a few screenshots pointing at Google Babel integration with Gmail. Now today, we are seeing more evidence that it’s being used right now with Google employees, probably for testing. Many people think the name is kinda weird. Which I’m one of them, I think it’s just a codename, because “Babel” just isn’t catchy to me. Today, Tech Radar got their hands on some new images leaked to them. Which basically confirm Google Babel for the web or desktop.
All the screenshots below are of Google Babel. Some are from the chat windows, that look pretty similar to what we have now in Gmail (as GTalk or Google Talk), there’s also an image from the Google Chrome debug console. As you can see they look pretty similar to the Google Talk we already know and love and use everyday. But some of the minor changes I’ve been able to see from these images are that you can now share images from the chat client. Which is something I wished Google Talk had.
What’s probably the most interesting here is that the name is confirmed by a hovercard on a “Feedback” link. Which is shown in the image at the beginning of this article. It states “What do you think about Babel in Gmail?” So it looks like we are getting very very close to seeing Babel available to everyone and being announced. My money is still on it not showing up until Google I/O next month in San Francisco. Since Google has a big event coming up, I’m sure they’ll want to announce their unified chat client there.
So what does everyone think? It looks relatively similar to Google Talk right now, at least on the desktop. Let us know your thoughts on Google Babel in the comments down below.
