It Looks like we have another entry into the thinner than thin smartphone category, this time from Huawei. The Chinese manufacturer recently handed over their latest handset to the Chinese equivalent of FCC, the Telecommunication Equipment Certification Center MIIT, and boy is it slim.
Thus far we do not have an actual name for the device just a code name, P6-U06, and through the filing we get to see some pretty good specifications. The documents show that this handset comes in with 132.6 x 65.5 x 6.18mm (5.2 x 2.6 x 0.2 inches) dimensions and that it tips the scales at 120g (4.2 ounces).
With a 4.7 inch 720p resolution TFT screen, it is nice to see Huawei putting a device out there for those of us who still prefer an average sized smartphone as opposed to a phablet, and as such the rest of the specs put it in similar company with phones phones of roughly the same screen size. For instance the P6-U06 comes with what is quickly becoming the standard 2 GB of RAM, and it is powered by a quad core 1.5 GHz processor.
The cameras on the P6-U06 may raise some eyebrows though but not for the reason you may think. While the rear facing shooter comes in at 8 megapixels, roughly what we have come to expect in a smartphone these days, it’s the front facing 5 megapixel lense which makes this device stand out a bit on paper.
Finally the P6-U06 comes out of the box running Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean and since this thing is being targeted for the Chinese market it comes with dual SIM card slots for it’s GSM and WCDMA radios.
While the Huawei P6-U06 is thin, it still won’t be the “world’s thinnest” as it stands right now. It was just a couple of weeks ago on April 10th that we reported on the Oppo R809T. You may recall that Oppo’s handset came in at just 6.13mm thin, or 0.05 mm smaller. While in real world usage that size difference doesn’t mean much, in the marketing world it’s huge. For a marketing department to be able to truthfully claim the “world’s thinnest” title over a competitor’s (almost as thin) device it could mean a few more units shipped.
Given the United States’ recent battles with Huawei it’s unlikely that we will ever see this device in this country, but in general what are your thoughts on these “world’s thinnest” handsets? I’m leaning towards them being nothing more than gimmicks but with a new rectangular slab coming out seemingly every other day I suppose you have to do anything you can in order to stand out.
