Devices running the Firefox OS are set to launch in five countries within Europe and South America by summer of this year. The Spanish e-retailer Geeksphone mentioned that the two handsets running Firefox OS “will be available for dispatch anywhere on earth.”
As it would turn out, the lower end 3.5-inch Firefox model named the Keon, just passed through the FCC. Along with it came some valuable information about the handset. Included in the FCC filing is information about the user manual, product photos, and some pretty detailed RF reports.
Here is a quick list of specs or at least what we could draw from the FCC info:
- 3.5-inch HVGA display
- 1GHz single-core Snapdragon S17225A processor
- 1,580mAh Lithium Ion battery
- GPRS/GSM/WCDMA 850MHz and 1900MHz bands (compatible with AT&T in the States)
The model number of this little orange fellow is C8666GP. If you decide to import it, it’s compatible with AT&T’s network here in the states as I mentioned above. You might be better off waiting to see how this all pans out before you jump the gun and import the Keon. Then again, most of the fun is being one of the first pioneers to try out a new platform.
Nevertheless, when the Keon is finally available it will cost about €91, which is about $120 US.
At this point, it’s a little early to determine how well these handsets will move. We caught a glimpse of the Keon and its brother Peak, at MWC earlier this year. Although the devices we saw at MWC were just developer units, which was not indicative of the consumer product hitting shelves soon.
It seems like only yesterday we were first talking about a rumored Firefox mobile OS, and now it’s all grown up. I’m breaking into tears just thinking about it. Oh, how the world changes.
No, I’m not actually tearing up, I’m indifferent to this news really. I’d love to hear what you think of the upcoming Firefox OS though. Let me know if you plan to give it a test drive, or if you’re going to stick with Android for now.
