The Acer Iconia A1, a 7.9-inch budget tablet, has appeared in benchmarks. Now, we all know benchmarks don’t mean anything, but until we can use the device in the real world they’re all we have to go on. Instead of benchmark scores, we have something a little different this time around though. The benchmark results actually offer a glimpse at the hardware specifications for the upcoming tablet. Here’s a quick list of what appeared on the GL Benchmark results.
- 1.2GHz quad core MediaTek MT8125 processor
- 7.9-inch IPS display with 1024 x 768 maximum resolution
- 1GB of RAM
- 16GB with MicroSD expansion slot
- Front facing 0.3 megapixel camera
- Rear facing 5 megapixel camera
- HDMI output
- Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean
Acer has yet to confirm the device officially, but it’s already appeared on the websites of various European retailers. Some would consider that to be enough evidence that it is indeed coming. I would much rather see mention of a US release date, but nothing has turned up yet.
The Acer Iconia A1 is rumored to cost between $149 and $199, which means it’s going to pretty much compete with the Nexus 7. Although many are pitting the Iconia A1 against the Apple iPad Mini, in comparison the Mini is priced around $329. Personally, I don’t like to compare budget tablets to Apple’s products because they are certainly not for budget minded individuals. I would argue that Apple’s products are specifically for people with money to blow.
Still, that price range is pretty broad even if it is only about a $50 difference between $150 and $200. Hopefully we’ll see an exact price for the tablet soon.
Acer has a decent reputation when it comes to tablets, so it’s exciting to hear about the upcoming Iconia A1. Previous models in the Iconia family make great 7-inch tablets, and I’m willing to bet many Iconia owners can attest to that fact.
