Android News U.K. Roundup 31/05/13 – LG Optimus L5, Samsung, HP, Oppo Find 5 and More!

Galaxy Young Brings Jelly Bean to 3.3-inch Handsets in the UK

Don’t ever assume that Samsung can’t make a cheaper device, just don’t. To prove their point, say hello to the Galaxy Young, a 3.3-inch device that brings Android 4.1, a single-core CPU, 768MB of RAM and more (well, less really) into a 3.3-inch 480 x 320 device. That’s right, Samsung went below the 3.5-inch mark. There’s no word on how much the Young is going to cost or which networks are carrying it but, expect this to cost no more than £100.

Oppo Find 5 Now Available in Europe

Here in the UK, we’re always hearing about the coolest new device to come out of China but, we rarely see it go up for sale. Or at least, we never see it go up for sale reputably enough for us to spend our cash. Things are changing though, because Oppo are selling their device themselves in Europe, for €399 for 16GB of storage. The device comes with a 5-inch 1080p Display, a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro and 2GB of RAM. You can find more info here.

Fairphone Goes Up For Pre-Order

Most of the time, we don’t think much about what’s gone into making our current smartphone, and so we just get it with our latest contract, and then that’s the end of it. But, there’s a little more to it than that. The Fairphone is a device that hopes to create an ethically fair smartphone. Think Fairtrade but for smartphones. The specs of the device aren’t great, but if you’re interested in supporting fair standards and sustainability then follow this link to find out more. 5,000 phones need to be pre-ordered to get things rolling, and so far they’re at 3,600!

Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos to Cost £300 in the UK

You didn’t think that Samsung were done with the strange devices, did you? Ha ha of course not. This is a little bit of a strange one because, it’s essentially a 5-inch Galaxy S III lookalike, with the specs of a Galaxy S II. So, for you £300 or so, you’ll be getting a 5-inch 800 x 480 display, and a dual-core CPU, alongside some other middling specs. What sets this apart however, is the inclusion of dual-SIM support. If that is indeed a thing.

EE Starts Offering 4G SIM-Only Plans

If for some reason, you have a device that supports 4G that isn’t tied to a contract with the UK’s only 4G contract provider, then you’ll be glad to know that EE are now offering 4G SIM-only plans. The pricing and such is above and it’s pretty reasonable when you see that they all include unlimited talk and text.

LG Optimus L5 On Limited Offer at Just £69.95

Carphone Warehouse are running a deal on this budget-minded LG handset until June 6th, which sees the Optimus L5 to go for just £70 on PAYG. The device isn’t stunning however, packing just an 800MHz CPU, 512MB of RAM, a HVGA (320×480) display, 5MP camera and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Then again, what more did you expect for £70? This might be a great device for the kids, how much trouble can they get into with this?

HP’s Slatebook x2 Apparently Coming to UK Soon

Here in the UK I think we know HP fondly as the folks that sold us all TouchPads for less than £90 or so in their “fire sale”. Now they’re back and while the Slate 7 is a disappointing device, the Slatebook x2 looks built out of something more. For one thing, the specs are much better and this tablet actually good replace your laptop in a few ways, thanks to its keyboard dock. To read more, head on over to our announcement post.
