APK Teardown Shows App Data Syncing, Cloud-based Location Service and Much More [Download Google Play Services v3.1 Now]

Over the weekend, Android Police had torn apart the new version of Google Play Services. Which is where we found out about Google Play Games. Now the famous APK teardown guy, Ron Amadeo is back with part 2 and even more juicy features that we should be seeing at Google I/O in less than 2 days.

Ron starts out by talking about the Games Codename which is internally known as “OneUp”. He moves on to the new sync adapters in the settings which you can find by going into Settings, then Google and tapping on your account. You’ll find that there are four new sync adapters. So what are sync adapters? Well to put them simply, it syncs information between your device and the cloud. Now as you can see from the screenshots above that two of the new sync adapters include “App Data” and “People Details”. So it looks like in addition to Game data syncing, we are getting app data syncing as well. Which is something I’ve been wanting for a long time. The other two are Games Sync and location reporting sync.

As we just stated above, there is a new location reporting sync adapter in Google Play Services v3.1. At this point, location syncing is all on a per-app basis. Basically apps will request the data from the system however often and long as they want. Now we don’t know exactly why this is new, or what it’s going to do. But I’m pretty sure we’ll see it in action later this week at Google I/O.

Ron also says that there were some movement with Google Wallet in the new apk, but it coul dbe just for in-app purchases in games. So basically, in this small apk, Google just gave us a ton of hints of what we’ll see at I/O which starts in a little more than 36 hours. I definitely can’t wait to see what they have up their sleeves for everyone at the Moscone Center on Wednesday.
