Yahoo just had their Flickr press conference where they unveiled some new features for Flickr, their photo sharing site. With the hopes of making Flickr “Awesome again”. Well they may have just done just that.
Yahoo has redesigned their Android app for Flick, as well as boasting their focus on mobility and attracting the younger audience. Way back, Flickr was a web 2.0 darling for photo sharing. It was a bit slow to adjust as consumers began taking more and more photos on their phones. If you look at Instagram, it still generates buzz among the youth demographic after it was purchased for about $1 billion by Facebook. Flickr has been trying to make up ground, and has overhauled their mobile apps with filters and editing tools.
Just last month Flickr advertised for an iOS mobile developer. The post stated “there’s a tremendously long list of features, programs and technologies set to come online this year” for Flickr.
The Senior Vice President of Mobile and Emerging products at Yahoo stated that Flickr reaches over 89 million people who have contributed 8 billion photos to the site. He is expecting about 881 billion pictures to be taken in 2014.
Flickr is also offering everyone a full terabyte of storage for their pictures, completely free. That’s a lot of photo storage. This all comes on the same day that Yahoo purchased Tumblr for $1.1 billion. Yahoo also announced that the company has a leased a new office in New York City. Where they will consolidate their 500 New York-based employees too, and has room for 200 more future hires.
So is Yahoo back? Well Flickr at least is. This is pretty big news. I’ll probably still throw all my pictures from my phone and tablet on Google+, but will definitely use Flickr for pictures from my DSLR. How many of you are currently trying to login to your Yahoo or Flickr accounts?
