Today, Google announced that they are combining your storage for Google Drive, Google+ Photos and Gmail. So instead of 5GB each, you’re starting out with 15GB of space for free. Not bad right? It also appears that they are doing away with the $2.50 plan that gives you 25GB of space. Instead, the lowest paid plan is $5 for 100GB of storage. Which is still not a bad plan.
So what does this all mean? Well you’re basically getting storage for all three Google services in one “bucket”. So instead of being stuck with 5GB of pictures for Google+, you can now have 10GB for Google+ pictures, and 5GB for Drive and Gmail, or vice versa. It may sound a bit confusing and quite possibly stupid, but when you think about it, it’s a good thing for users.
If you’re one of those that uses Gmail hardcore or keeps every email, you’ll definitely benefit from this. As it basically means you can have up to 16TB of Gmail space. Before all their plans only gave 25GB of space to Gmail accounts. But if you’re saving that many emails, you need to do some inboxing purging.
Google says that these changes will begin rolling out over the next few weeks. So if you head over to the storage page now you won’t notice any difference. I just checked mine, and it looks the same as before. Once the storage page has been updated, it will show how much data you are using in a pie chart, like the image at the beginning of this article. Which is rather nice change.
Additionally, if you have a Google App account, you’ll be getting this “upgrade” as well. But instead of being stuck at 15GB, you’ll be getting a hefty 30GB to go around all of these services. So not a bad update from Google for these three services, am I right?
