MediaTek pushed their quad-core MT6589 chip onto the market recently, and a whole slew of Chinese smartphone manufacturers have actually scooped it up for use in their devices. They’re gobbling it up because it’s powerful yet affordable. Even some of the big names in the business like Sony are starting to eyeball MediaTek’s chipsets.
MediaTek is now gearing up to launch the turbo edition of their previous model chip, labeled the MT6589T (gee, I wonder where that “T” came from). The new turbo chipset has been used in several Chinese devices and the benchmarks are quite impressive. Keep in mind, and I always say this, benchmarks do not provide an accurate example of real-world performance, though.
The UMi X2 Turbo is equipped with the MT6589T chip mentioned above, and it scored a surprising 14,525 in AnTuTu. In comparison, it beat out the Google Nexus 7 and the Nexus 10 in terms of performance. For a budget device that’s not bad at all. In fact, that’s pretty damn good actually.
The UMi X2 is set to launch on May 15th, so that means MediaTek’s chip is out to market. We’ll probably start to see it used more often in other devices from China.
The real news here is that MediaTek’s chip increases the potential for future budget and low-end devices. I know you’ve heard the arguments before that companies often toss mid-grade and low-end devices to the curb when it comes to hardware. This may be a chance for companies to offer something real nice, at least for the time being.
No, even I will admit the score alone is not mind blowing but this is a low-end device we’re talking about here. It will be interesting to see what companies actually adopt the MediaTek chipset over the next few months, if any do at all.
Strictly speaking, in regards to the benchmarks, would you be more likely to consider a low-end device if they used relatively powerful chipsets like MediaTek’s? I’m a premium and high-end man myself, so I completely understand if you’re of mind that mid to low grade isn’t worth it.
