The competition between in country rivals LG and Samsung is really heating up as of late. The good news for us the consumer is that for the most part the battles have taken place in the designing rooms and storefronts rather than in a bunch of courthouses around the globe.
It is well known to anyone who follows this stuff that the two South Korean manufacturers have been trying to one up each other on the display technology front. For instance we just learned of a recent patent filing from Samsung regarding a tablet with a flexible display, something that has been in the pipeline for some time.
Now it looks like LG is already firing back at Samsung with their own display innovations and they are showcasing them in a pretty big way. At this years “SID Display Week 2013”, currently ongoing in Vancouver British Columbia up in Canada from May 19th to the 24th, the company has a booth set up (#1012 if you are in the neighborhood) in order to showcase their latest display technology.
Smartphones are obviously a main focus for the manufacturer and they have some new innovations for five inch displays that are certain to raise a few eyebrows. For the first time LG will be showing off their flexible displays to the general public. This supposedly unbreakable plastic OLED panel for mobile devices “comes at a crucial time when smart devices are being used more than ever and at increased risk for damage from drops, hits, and other accidents.”
Another focus for LG during this week’s trade show will be on borderless technology. In an effort to spotlight it’s commitment to heightened design standards, LG will be showing off a 5-inch HD LCD panel for smartphones with 1.0mm bezel. “The 5-inch HD panel will feature 1.0mm bezel allowing production of borderless smartphones that are lightweight and emit significantly less heat.”
Finally LG will also be unveiling some advancements with their 7-inch displays. Like the aforementioned 5-inch display, the 7-inch HD LCD panels are based on Oxide TFT. “TFT technology offers high investment efficiency in producing thin, high transparency, and low power consumption displays.” The 7-inch display will also be equipped with touch function-embedded technology enabling superior touch functionality in thin and lightweight mobile products.
