Since Google announced the Galaxy S4 ‘Google Edition’ at Google I/O and now the HTC One ‘Google Edition’ there has been a lot of talk of the Nexus program going away. Well, Sundar Pichai who is in charge of Android, Chrome and Apps is on stage at the D11 conference right now, and has said that the Nexus program will continue.
Pichai said that “the goal behind Nexus was to guide the ecosystem. But that will continue as well.” So for all of us Nexus fans out there, don’t be too worried we’ll still see new Nexus devices coming out. We’ll more than likely see one this fall. But instead of having just one stock Android device to choose from, Google is working to bring you choices in the Galaxy S4, HTC One and the Nexus line.
We’re still expecting a new Nexus 7 this summer along with Android 4.3. There is a rumor that it will be unveiled on June 10th, which is the day that WWDC begins in San Francisco. It’s still not confirmed that it’ll be unveiled then, but all we can do is hope.
So we probably won’t see a bunch of Nexus phones, but we’ll see quite a few AOSP devices like the Galaxy S4 and HTC One, which is a good move by Google. It gives choices to those that want stock Android on their devices. It should also allow for more stable stock Android ROMs for these phones and possibly more sales for Samsung and HTC. But where they aren’t subsidized who knows. The Nexus line still might get more sales based on the pricing of those devices.
