AT CES this year, Samsung showed off some flexible display prototypes from their YOUM brand. We’ve actually seen and heard about flexible displays from a plethora of different manufacturers over the past few months. We have yet to see a working device with a flexible AMOLED display, though.
Now we might have a pretty good idea of what a tablet equipped with a flexible display will look like, as we’ve just caught a glimpse at some new 10′ tablet renders. Of course, renders are hardly indicative of a finished product, but these renders seem like they’re based on sketches included in a Samsung patent filing some time ago. Then again, if you’ve ever seen a sketch from a patent filing you know that they don’t actually reveal much aside from the physical design.
Estimated specs were included with the renders, and they seem to be pretty spot on.
- 1.6GHz Exynos 5 Octa processor
- 2GB of installed RAM
- Full HD flexible display (1920 x 1080)
- 16 or 32GB of internal storage with MicroSD expansion slot
- 3MP front facing camera
- 8000mAh battery (seems a little exaggerated)
You’ll probably notice, like I did, that there’s no mention of a rear facing camera. If the tablets do include a flexible display there may not even be a need for one, however. Ideally, you could bend the top portion of the tablet so that the front facing camera can be used in multiple ways.
Obviously, the thin form factor and strange flexible design doesn’t allow for a QWERTY keyboard. The way the bottom of the device is folded like a stand though could indicate the perfect location for a virtual QWERTY substitute.
Furthermore, that massive 8,000 mAh battery definitely seems a little exaggerated, especially for such a thin device. I’m not entirely sure how they would pack such a large battery into the device in a way that wouldn’t hinder the flexible display but stranger things have happened. I’ve always held on to the idea that larger battery sizes would be ideal, especially when it comes to battery life.
All things aside, what do you think of the renders? With the combination of the physical design and the estimated specs, would you consider purchasing one of these?
