Google Testing new Ad Formats for Gmail, Ads that Look like Emails?

Google Operating System blog is reporting today that Google is testing some new ad formats in Gmail. In the new tabbed interface which began rolling out a few weeks ago. Under the promotions tab, Gmail will be tossing in some ads from different companies. The ones shown off in the picture above are Hostgator and Lumosity.com.

According to the Google Operating System blog:

“It’s a new type of ad which you can forward to a friend, or star to save it to your inbox. If you dismiss this ad, you won’t see it again,” informs Google. You can click “dismiss” or use the “x” icon to remove an ad. If you want to see all the sponsored promotions for your account, go to this page.

If you go to that page, you’ll see a bunch of partners Google has already including Florida Tech, Vistaprint, Home Security, Western Union, GoDaddy.com, Mazda, Full Sail University, and of course our favorite partner, Samsung.

There’s no word as to when these ads will begin making their way to your tabbed inbox, but when they do, the text ads will no longer appear. Also these ads will only appear in the Promotions tab of your inbox, which is normally where the not so important stuff go. So it shouldn’t be a  huge deal to the most of us. But keep in mind that Google still makes the most of their money from Ads.

What’s cool about all of this is that you can remove the Promotions tab in your inbox. But there’s no word yet as to whether that will bring back the old text ads or get rid of ads altogether. I think these ads might be a bit less intrusive, which is always awesome.
