HTC One Taking Third Spot in Smartphone Sales

The HTC One is a pretty great device, we thought as much when we reviewed the device earlier in the year, and it’s looking like the rest of the nation is singing the same tune. While there’s nothing completely concrete to suggest as much, Barron’s are reporting that the One is coming in third when it comes to sales, to the Galaxy S4 and the iPhone 5. Regardless of how you feel about HTC, that’s an impressive feat for the company, especially when you consider how immensely popular Samsung and their Galaxy S line has become over the past year or so. William Power does a weekly check up when it comes to smartphone sales across the US and this is what he came up with this time around:

“At AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile the HTC One continues to be noted frequently as the third-best-selling device behind the iPhone and S4. At Verizon, the Motorola RAZR HD and other RAZR models are frequently highlighted as alternative options to the iPhone 5 and S4. The Samsung Note II, LG Optimus G, and LG Nexus 4 also received honorable mentions from several reps we spoke with.”

At this point, it seems that third is all that HTC can hope for, they were asleep when Samsung fired up their massive marketing machine with the Galaxy S III and no matter how much of a better product you sell, it’s still tough to out perform Apple. Is there anything wrong with being third in sales? Absolutely not. The smartphone market is a crowded place right now, and while it would seem that Samsung and Apple have everything locked down, there’s still a little room for HTC.

It’s a shame to see HTC suffering as they have been over the past year, they make great smartphones and they’re arguably – along with Samsung – one of the companies that helped get Android to the level of popularity it’s at now. I’m glad that HTC are making a comeback of sorts, and I only hope that they’ve learnt their lesson and stick with one flagship, and continue to put their foot down when it comes to the carriers.
