Mad Catz to Launch Project MOJO, an 'Android Micro Console' to Compete with the OUYA

Game consoles are all the rage lately, especially since the recent announcements of the Xbox One and Playstation 4 are still fresh in everyone’s mind. With all the stipulations for the next generation of consoles, particularly on Microsoft’s side of the fence the OUYA console is becoming more and more attractive.

That’s why it’s not surprising that another company has stepped up to take on the OUYA in the affordable Android console market. Mad Catz, a company most popular for producing cheap and affordable gaming peripherals has announced Project MOJO. There’s still quite a bit left unmentioned from the announcement, but Mad Catz CEO Darren Richardson did confirm it will be an “Android micro console.”

According to Richardson, Project Mojo is party of the company’s new GameSmart initiative and it will “interact seamlessly” with the company’s line of game controllers, mice, keyboards and headsets.

Richardson announced said information on a conference call, and provided a little more insight into the upcoming console. From what it sounds like, it will be about the size of a smartphone and it will plug directly into a television (obviously). It’s going head to head with Android game consoles like the longstanding OUYA, newly announced Gamepop and slightly overlooked GameStick.

“At next week’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles we will unveil the keystone product in our GameSmart initiative, Project M.O.J.O., an android micro console configured to harness the maximum gaming horsepower from an android device. The Project M.O.J.O. android micro console is being designed to interact seamlessly with our GameSmart controllers, mice, keyboards and headsets. With our long history in the gaming industry, Mad Catz has the technical capability, product breadth, global distribution, and developer and publisher relationships that uniquely position our company to embark on this ambitious initiative. We believe the GameSmart initiative fits perfectly with our long-term strategy of designing innovative products for passionate gamers and our strategy of expanding into emerging markets.”

Just going by the information we have, it seems like Project Mojo will focus a lot more on the added peripherals that are compatible with it. In other words, peripherals are going to be its “thing.”

The company is expected to officially announce, and probably unveil, the device at E3 which is just next week (June 11-13). Rumors have mentioned that Mad Catz entered a partnership with NVIDIA, and if that’s true the console is likely powered by the Tegra processor and will be backed by the popular game hardware company. That also means TegraZone will be available for the MOJO, provided it is actually powered by a Tegra processor.

What do you think of the news? Obviously, we’re all waiting to hear more about the specs, and to see the aesthetics of the console. Mad Catz have been in the game for a while though, have you ever had any kind of memorable experience with their products?
