The mythical OUYA has had what seems like one of the longest journeys from conception to launch in a long time. What was once the darling of the gaming community and of Kickstarter is fast becoming a genuine product for you and I to head out there and buy. Retail availability of the OUYA console starts today at just $99. If you need some sort of refreshed, the OUYA broke onto the scene last year as a super-affordable gaming console powered by Android, that would eventually retail for just $99. Running on Android has a lot of benefits for the device, games are cheap, easy for developers to port over and the pace of development will be as quick as you like. While it’s received some mixed reviews, the Internet is pretty much in agreement that this is the best piece of gaming gear you can pick up for $99.
Today is the day that the console launches across the nation in stores and online stores for the general public to purchase. Which is pretty much the final stop for the OUYA when you think about it, the backers have had their devices and now, it’s finally the turn of general consumers to buy their own affordable game console. Of course, this has been one popular piece of hardware, and it stands to reason that demand has been higher than expected.
The OUYA has already sold out at a number of places, and the little guy is proofing to be somewhat elusive. Over at Amazon US, it’s listed as temporarily out of stock, while Best Buy is claiming the console ships within 1 working day and you can check your local store for pick-up info. As for GameStop, they’re not listing any stock online at all. Target is posing a little bit of a mystery, with the device not listed as being out of stock or in stock, and of course, they’re not selling it in stores. For our UK readers, who have to pay £99 and can only buy it from GAME and Amazon UK will be happy to hear that it’s available to buy from GAME but, not so happy that it’s shipping within 1-3 weeks from Amazon UK.
Overall, the OUYA has landed but not in massive quantities. Hopefully they can get some more hardware out there for folks to sink their teeth into, and if you’ve already got your hands on one let us know how you like it in the comments!
