Chris Yerga, the engineering director of Android announced at Google I/O that a new redesign would soon be coming to the Google Play web store. According to him, and the previews it’s going to look a lot more like the mobile version of the store. Other than offering a few quick looks at the new store setup, Yerga didn’t reveal much else. In fact, all he said was that the updated version of the Play store would arrive “over the coming weeks.”
Apparently, the new version has just started to rollout to Google employees now, and we can only guess that it will soon rollout to everyone else over the next few weeks. Usually, Google adopts the new layout for an app or platform just before launch. As such, some new screenshots have cropped up, presumably from one lucky individual with access to the new store version.
Judging by the screenshots, it looks like the new navigation menu will sit off to the left at all times instead of sitting at the very top of the page. The new card style UI that was introduced for Google+ returns in the Play store redesign. It takes after the Google Now design. As you can see the Play store content is organized in pretty much the same manner as it is now, it just has the new card style layout.
Most of the store areas remain the same, there’s a recommended section, featured content section and more. It’s the same old Google Play store, albeit with a new layout. What I find particularly interesting is the new releases section at the very top. Let’s hope people are a little more accepting of the Google Play redesign. The reactions to the new Google+ layout were certainly unwelcoming in a general sense, at least from what I saw.
The images included here are taken from Yerga’s presentation at Google I/O, which means the final design could change a bit. Still, with any luck Google will launch the new version for everyone soon.
What do you think of the design showed off in the screenshots? Do you like it? Do you see anything in particular that’s missing, which you happen to like about the current design? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
