Press Invite from Sony Teases Xperia Z Ultra, Big Reveal at July 4th Event

If there was any question about when the Xpera Z Ultra would be unveiled to the public, it’s pretty much gone now. A Sony Mobile press invite cropped up alluding to an upcoming event in France on Thursday July 4, at 9:30. The message on the invite translates roughly to the following:

“Sony Mobile reserves a big surprise for you.”

Remember, the Xperia ZU is rumored to be a pretty massive 6.44-inch phablet equipped with a 1080p “Triluminos with X-Reality for Mobile” display. That “big surprise” is likely the Xperia Z Ultra that has long been rumored.

The invite also shows the text being written by a stylus, which supports the idea that the Xperia ZU would include distinct stylus support. That message that’s being written, it includes the following text:

“Do not forget to mark your calendars!”

Oh, don’t you worry Sony we certainly won’t forget to mark them.

The Xperia ZU is expected to be water and dust resistant like so many of Sony’s recent devices, but if we’re going by the image on the press invite alone you can clearly see the 3.5mm headphone jack uncovered and wide open. Perhaps Sony coated the inside of the port with unique waterproof sealant?

Also visible on the side profile of the handset is the dedicated camera button, a power button known to Sony devices, and a volume rocker. What other unique features will the Xperia ZU be packing?

We’ll know soon enough, since July 4 is less than a month away now. Are you excited for news about Sony’s latest handset?

The rumored specs for the Xperia ZU include the following:

  • 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor
  • Adreno 330 graphics support
  • 2GB of installed RAM
  • 16GB internal storage with MicroSD expansion slot
  • 8MP rear facing camera with 2.2MP front facing
  • Android 4.2.2

Sony doesn’t generally go with the bleeding edge when equipping handsets with internal hardware so it’s refreshing to see the Snapdragon 800 chipset rumored. Then again, it’s just a rumor at the end of the day and the handset could very well end up with lesser hardware. Do you have any predictions for what we might see on July 4th?
