The Xperia Z is a pretty great phone and while it’s taken a long time to make its way West into the US, it’s finally coming to T-Mobile soon. We reviewed the phone earlier on in the year, and while we found the device had its problems, overall we were happy with it. The one thing that we were more than happy with was the performance of the device, it was perfectly snappy and there wasn’t a hint of lag to be found anywhere. The Xperia Z is powered by a Snapdragon S4 Pro at 1.5 Ghz, the very same that’s used in the Nexus 4 and the Droid DNA.
For a lot of people, it’s plenty fast enough and considering that the Snapdragon 600 is very similar, the chip from 2012 is still more than adequate. Of course, Sony being Sony, there’s talk of them putting even more speed inside of the Xperia Z. Eldar Murtazin, who’s a Russian blogger who’s been credited to numerous leaks and rumors over the years, has sent a tweet out claiming he’s testing an updated version of the phone with a Snapdragon 800 inside of it.
As always, it’s a good idea to have a pinch of salt nearby as rumors will be rumors but, it seems like a very strange move from Sony. Why would they “refresh” a device that’s been on the market since March or so? Especially when you consider that the Xperia Z is only just making its way to the US, all of this seems pretty suspect. There’s also the looming announcement of something pretty special from Sony as well, making this little rumor seem more like wishful thinking to us.
There’s a chance that what Eldar has his hands on is in fact the Xperia Z Ultra, pegged to be the successor to the Xperia Z that’s to be announced this Summer. That sounds a lot more likely to us but, one thing’s for sure, if Sony are looking at using newer CPUs, it’s good news for us all.
