It looks like the Wikipad 7 is actually nearing launch. Wikipad Inc. the company behind the gamepad equipped tablet announced that the device will be released on June 11th. Of course, this information pertains to the US release only. The device will rollout internationally sometime near the end of the summer.
The Wikipad 7 is going to cost around $249, and includes first and foremost a 7-inch display and a quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor.
We’ve covered the Wikipad pretty extensively here at Android Headlines, so I’m sure you’ve heard about it before. Just in case, here’s the detailed list of specs for the device:
- Quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor
- 7-inch display with 1280×800 maximum resolution, and a 16:10 aspect ratio
- Integrated gamepad controls with dual analog sticks, it’s detachable too
- 16GB of internal storage with MicroSD expansion slot
- HDMI output
- 2MP front facing camera
- Gyroscope, accelerometer, and GPS
- Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with Google Play access
- NVIDIA TegraZone app preinstalled
This is pretty big news, especially since June 11th really isn’t far away at all. Hopefully, there will be no more delays. The Wikipad was originally supposed to be a 10-inch tablet, but the company ran into production issues and decided to downsize the device and refine hardware and software components. At the time, the portable gaming console and tablet hybrid was within a week of launching. So close, but yet so far.
Many will be discouraged to see the NVIDIA Tegra 3 powering the device, especially since the Tegra 4 is nearing a commercial launch. That being said, the Tegra 3 is definitely powerful enough to handle most, if not all of the graphically intensive games that are currently available in the Google Play market. The TegraZone app offers titles exclusively optimized for use with the NVIDIA Tegra chipset.
Of course, the OUYA game console will be launching soon too. That’s a full blown console however, instead of a portable setup like the Wikipad. Which design do you prefer? Would you ever play a portable console like the Wikipad or would you much rather have a traditional game console? Let us know in the comments!
Update:Slight oversight on my part, the Wikipad will also be available in the UK on June 11th, as well!
