The latest market share numbers are in from IDC. The IDC shows numbers from all the smartphone manufacturers. So that includes Apple, Blackberry (RIM), Nokia, and everyone else. Up above, you can see the table which shows the top five manufacturers followed by others.
As to no ones surprise, Samsung is still number one. They shipped 72.4 million units in Q2 2013, compared to 50.3 million in Q2 2012. That’s a 43.9% change for Samsung. So not bad at all. Apple saw a 20% change, but we don’t care about them, right? LG on the other hand say a huge shift. They shipped 1.1 million units in Q2 2013 compared to 4.9 million units in Q2 2012. That’s a whopping 108.6% change for Samsung’s next-door neighbor. But Lenovo saw an even bigger change. Going from 4.9 million units in Q2 2012, to about 11.3 million units in Q2 2013. That equals out to a 130.6% change for Lenovo. ZTE also jumped about 57.8% year over year. But notably missing is Motorola and HTC, they’ve now fallen into the ‘Others’ category with Nokia, Blackberry and others.
It’s quite surprising to see Lenovo gain 130.6% year-over-year, especially since they haven’t brought a single phone over to the US. Lenovo has a few tablets over here, in fact I’m working on reviewing one right now. But these are smartphone numbers, in which Lenovo has zero in the US. They have released the K900 over in Asia, and it’s a pretty nice looking phone. It’s a 5-inch 1080p device with a powerful Intel chip. Lenovo has expressed interest in coming to the US, so we’re hoping they’ll make their way over here pretty soon.
As far as LG goes, I can’t say I’m all that surprised. Looking at Q2 2012, that was before the Optimus G and Nexus 4 which really put LG on the map again. In Q2 this year they released the Optimus G Pro which is an awesome device, and LG is going to continue to grow, especially if the reports of the G2 hitting all four major US carriers is indeed true.
