In the quest to make ever thinner and lighter phones, manufacturers are working overtime in order to develop new technology to make their devices thinner and better than the rest. Today LG Display, the world’s largest LCD manufacturer continue to push the envelope as they unveiled their new 5.2 inch Full HD LCD display. Measuring in at 2.2 mm in thickness along with a barely noticeable 2.3 mm bezel; LG claim this is the world’s thinnest and narrowest Full HD display. This display is perfect for future smartphones because you are able to increase the size of the screen without increasing the overall footprint of the device or as LG have put it, better ‘grip-ability’; an essential quality if LG hope to continue competing against their main rival Samsung in the smartphone market.
To create this new innovative screen LG used an Advanced One-Glass-Solution (OGS) along with new touch screen technology for its construction. This technique is then combined with a new Dual Flexible Printed Circuit and a special Optical Clear Resin which allows LG to create the display as one unit, saving space, while also offering better clarity and brightness than previous generation LCD displays. Unfortunately, the construction of the entire display as a single piece does have its drawbacks because a broken screen will warrant a larger repair bill because the entire display unit has to be replaced.
LG have also released the technical specifications of the new display. It has a 1920 x 1080 resolution utilising a true Full HD display because it uses an RGB layout instead of the RGBG PenTile layout found on most AMOLED displays. It also offers a peak brightness of 535 nits, which is impressive for a 1080p display because as resolution increases, the brightness of the display tends to decrease, but at 535 nits it is one of the brightest LCD panels on the market. The display will also have an Ambient Contrast Ratio 3.74:1 in an environment of 10,000 lux which is equivalent to a mid day sun on a clear day so it will have excellent readability in an outdoor environment even on a sunny day. These results are excellent and have been independently certified by Intertek.
LG is the world’s largest LCD panel maker and for good reason and by focusing on their LCD displays they hope to differentiate themselves from Samsung’s AMOLED displays. Personally I can’t wait until the first devices featuring these displays are released as well as what Samsung will do in response to this new breakthrough.
