Wearable technology is likely to be the next major form factor to take the industry by storm. What is odd is the fact that while everyone seems to know this, there are actually very few devices available to the public market. In terms of glasses, there are products like Google Glass and Recon Jet, but it seems like smartwatches will be a more practical solution for most people. In this area, the only real contenders are the popular Pebble smartwatch and Sony’s smartwatch, which is slated for an update later this year.
Now, Samsung is reportedly joining in on the fun with the Samsung Gear. A new report suggests that Samsung will hold a press conference where they will unveil the device alongside the highly anticipated Galaxy Note III in September. While we were obviously expecting Samsung to release a smartwatch, we had no idea that it would come so soon.
Releasing the device alongside the Galaxy Note III is actually a great idea and will likely boost the sales of both devices. Due to the fact that the Note III is expected to be even larger than its predecessor, Samsung will probably use the smartwatch to add a sense of portability to a device that can be a little bulky at times.
The company could very easily sell the devices alongside each other. There is no denying that the Note III will likely be a little difficult to hold in your hand and consequently, may not be a device that you want to be fishing out of your pocket or purse on a regular basis. The smartwatch can be marketed as a method of checking your basic notifications without having to pull out a bulky device only to find out that you got an unimportant email.
While there are no release dates yet, if this turns out to be true, then Samsung will join Sony in the lonely line of companies offering smartwatches. However, we have heard previous reports that Google, Motorola, LG, and Apple are all expected to launch their own smartwatch some time soon. However, with recent developments, Google’s and Motorola’s device could potentially turn out to be one in the same.
