As you probably expect, Samsung spends a lot of money on R&D or as others know it as, Research & Development. Of course, you need to, to be able to throw out devices like the Galaxy Note, Galaxy S4 Zoom, and even the Galaxy NX Camera. Now it looks like Samsung is getting ready to build 5 more R&D centers. Each center is going to cost them about $900 million, which is about $4.5 billion altogether. That’s just chump change for Samsung right? I mean, last year they spent over $500 million just on marketing.
Each of the new R&D centers will be focusing on different aspects of the innovation process. There’s a creative ideas incubator, applied materials science projects, components, flat screens and chipset research. One of the centers will be near Suwon and dedicated and be exclusively for smart devices. So that would mean smartphones, tablets and probably wearable tech like smartwatches. We’ll definitely have to keep a watchful eye and see what comes out of these R&D centers that Samsung is working on. Here’s what one of Samsung’s research scientists said:
R&D may not generate tangible results in the short term. But the key point is that Samsung can’t survive, if it fails to develop products that can give value to customers. Much of the remarkable progress in fields such as mobile computing and medicine has been possible thanks to the advancement of information technology backed increased spending on research.
Every company has to do some R&D. Or they’ll just release products that will never sell. So Samsung putting together these 5 new R&D centers is a good thing, a very good thing. It means that Samsung will be able to do more developing and create even more devices that will revolutionize how we use our smartphone, tablet, camera, and any other electronic. Samsung already makes just about everything under the sun, so imagine what they could do with a bit more R&D?
