T-Mobile is already working hard to get their 4G LTE network available. In fact, they are ahead of schedule. They were slated to cover 100 million people by mid-year and actually covered over 157 million people by their event in July. According to Light Reading, T-Mobile is getting ready to upgrade its 4G LTE market to 2x10MHz service in 90% of their top 25 markets by the end of 2013. What does 2x10MHz mean? Well plain and simple, more speed! Most of T-Mobile’s markets are running on 2x5MHz channels which mean less speed and 2x10MHz means more speeds. I’ve seen some of John Legere’s tweets where he posted screenshots in NYC on 2x10MHz LTE and man it was fast. Around 60mbps download and about 30mbps upload. Not bad right?
Right now, T-Mobile is lighting up parts of their New York City market with the 2x10MHz channels. “For testing purposes… we have been briefly deploying and testing 10+10 MHz of LTE in a few areas of the city,” said the spokesperson who wrote to Light Reading in an email.
During the tests, T-Mobile “took down” their HSPA+ 42mbps network and bumped it back to HSPA+ 21mbps and then restored it right after tests:
“In these areas during brief testing windows we have taken HSPA+ 42 to HSPA+ 21 – and then restored HSPA+ 42 after the tests.”
T-Mobile plans to update NYC to 2×10 by the end of this year, in addition to it’s HSPA+ 42mbps network. Along with 90% of the top 25 markets in the US to 2x10MHz channel.
I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m getting excited about this. T-Mobile already has pretty fast LTE for me here in Detroit. And adding the 10+10MHz channel to the network is going to make it even faster, which is definitely going to make me happy. How many of our readers are T-Mobile customers?
