Android OTA: Device Updates & Firmware Weekly Report – August 22nd Edition

HTC One and Droid DNA to Get 4.3 by End of September

Users of HTC smartphones will be no strangers to empty promises from HTC when it comes to updates. Hopefully, this latest pledge isn’t an empty promise and HTC are finally catching up when it comes to updates. HTC’s US President, Jason Mackenzie took to Twitter to give us some info on Android 4.3 hitting the One and the Droid DNA. He had this to say:

Lots of questions re 4.3 release for One. We r wrking hard (needs cert) to release 4.3 across all US, Canada skus by end Sept. DNA as well.

Hopefully, this means that an update is not too far away. With the HTC One the same phone on all carriers in the US and Canada, it should be easier for them to get the update to roll out. It seems that HTC’s biggest obstacles here might well be AT&T and Verizon’s “testing” schedules.

Nexus 4 Gets “JWR66Y” Update for “Security”

The Nexus 4 on T-Mobile has been updated to a newer build number of Android 4.3, JWR66Y. In T-Mobile’s notes, all that’s listed is security fixes. That’s hardly very helpful but, there’s probably not much to write home about here, anyway. After all, this is not Android 4.3.1 or anything like that, so any major bugs you have now, expect to keep them. It should also be hitting all unlocked Nexus 4s as they’re essentially the same device, let us know if you have the update in the comments below.

International HTC One Updated with Mini+ Support

The HTC One is getting yet another update Internationally and this time it’s bring support for the HTC Mini+, the device you see above. The update comes in at just 33MB and brings the version number up to 2.24.401.8. All the update does is bring support for the Mini+ that recently went on sale in the UK and fixes a bug that allows users to now use the Google Keyboard.

Chromecast Gets Another Small Update

Google’s little addition to the living room has already been updated a couple of times now but, there’s more coming. With the recent update to version 12940 the Chromecast there’s one more update to add to the list. This time around, the only updates is better discovery of devices and improvement of playback of Google Play Movies. The update should happen automatically, leaving you nothing to worry about.

International HTC One X Gets Android 4.2.2 and Sense 5

HTC haven’t been known as a company to do updates justice but, they’ve come out of the blue and update the One X to Android 4.2.2 and bring Sense 5 along with it. The update to Android 4.2.2 has been hitting the Tegra 3 version of the One X all over the globe and brings with it BlinkFeed and some additional camera features, too. The update to version number 4.18.401.2 comes in at 380MB. There’s a ZIP of the update available over at XDA but, if you’re familiar with XDA chances are you’re on a custom ROM anyway. Devs will have to wait for the source code to be released to do anything with updated kernel source but, that shouldn’t be too long hopefully.
