Android OTA: Device Updates & Firmware Weekly Report – August 8th Edition

Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 and Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 3G Getting Android 4.2

As usual, Samsung is keeping their devices up-to-date and this time around we have the update to Android 4.2.2. The Galaxy Note 8.0 LTE (GT-N5120) and the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 3G (GT-P3100) are both getting updates to Android 4.2.2. The Note 8.0’s update is coming in at a massive 1.37 GB while the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0’s update is till fairly large at 837MB. Both updates are rolling out in stages, with the Galaxy Note 8.0 getting the update in the UK and elsewhere. The files are dotted around the internet, so you could go and flash them if you’re feeling dangerous but, it might be better to wait for the update to float along to your device in the next week or two.

Both HTC One and Galaxy S4 Google Play Editions Get Android 4.3

When it was announced that the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4 Play Editions would be updated by their respective manufacturers, there was a little bit of worrying by some. Well, we’re glad to announce that the HTC One and GS4 Google Editions now have Android 4.3. The update rolled out earlier in the week and it seems to be pretty much the same as the Nexus updates. The Kernel version is still at 3.4 and the updates are slim coming in at around 190MB for both devices.

Xperia Tablet Z LTE Gets Android 4.2.2

Sony is another one of those companies that’s doing good things when it comes to updates and now they’re taking care of the Xperia Tablet Z. It’s only the LTE version that seems to have gotten the update to Android 4.2.2 – bringing the build number to 10.3.1.A.0.244 – but it wouldn’t surprise us if the WiFi versions weren’t too far behind. The update is a pretty standard version bump but, Sony have moved around some of the UI elements. Now, notifications come down from the top like they would on the Nexus 10, and the software buttons are more central now. Thing of this as a blend of the Sony UI on Android 4.1 and the new interface introduced in Android 4.2 on the Nexus 10.

HTC One VX on AT&T Finally Gets Jelly Bean

At long last, HTC’s mid-range device on AT&T finally has Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Much like other HTC updates it’s taken long enough but, we suppose it’s better late than never. The update comes in at a fairly massive 629MB and HTC advise 20 minutes and 30% battery charge. It’s probably a good idea to be on WiFi when performing this update. For those with the One VX, this is more than likely going to be the last update you get, so enjoy it while you can. The update won’t bring Sense 5 to the handset, and instead keeps things at Sense 4+.

Samsung Galaxy Note Gets Android 4.1 in Japan

While most of you are waiting for Android 4.2.2 to hit your Samsung devices, those in Japan have only just got a taste of Android 4.1 on their OG Galaxy Notes. This is a fairly large update for the Note and brings with it a speed-boost, Google Now, better S-Pen support and more. The update is rolling out to NTT DoCoMo customers and will leave your Note at software version SC05DOMMSG.

HiSense Sero 7 Pro Will be Getting Android 4.3 Later This Year

The Sero 7 Pro is a great tablet for the price and the fact that it ships with stock Android is a big bonus for many of you. While it might not have a prestigious brand attached to it, HiSense is said to be updating the device to Android 4.3 later in the year. While it’s not definite, AndroidSpin did some digging and it seems that they’re working on it. Of course, the fact that they’re still not GPL-compliant isn’t a good sign.

Motorola XOOM Gets Android 4.1.2 on Verizon

Ah, the original Motorola Xoom, the device that kickstarted this whole Android tablet business. Well, you might remember that the device was available on Verizon as well. That version of the XOOM is finally getting Android 4.1.2, the same update the WiFi version got many moons ago. This brings with it Google Now, Project Butter and all the improvements in Jelly Bean. We’re disappointed that it hasn’t at least got Android 4.2 but, it’s had a pretty good run so far, don’t you think?

HTC One X+ Getting Android 4.2 and Sense 5 in Asia

As we all know by now, it can take HTC some time to update their devices. The One X+ was an incremental leap from the One X that was 2012’s flagship for the company but, it’s only just getting Android 4.2. Not just that but, users are reporting that the update is only rolling out now in parts of Asia. There is some good news though, this brings the update to Sense 5 as well, giving access to BlinkFeed and the minimal look that they debuted with the One. Android 4.2 didn’t add too much in the first place but, when the update does reach your device you’ll have access to lockscreen widgets and more.

Lenovo IdeaTab A1000 Gains a Little More Storage for Apps in Latest Update

In a recent update that should be rolling out to IdeaTab A1000 owners, Lenovo have addressed one of the device’s flaws. When we reviewed the device, the internal storage situation of just 512MB for apps etc was simply not good enough. Well, with this latest update, they’ve addressed this and expanded this to 1.5 GB. While they say there’s no more that they can do right now they are looking to make the internal storage one whole partition for everything.
