If you’re someone like me, who likes to live on the cutting edge of technology, then you’re probably running Chrome Beta on Android. On Thursday, the Chrome for Android team released a new version of Chrome Beta. It’s now sitting at version 30. As expected, it brings in a ton of new features as well like gestures, searching by images has improved, WebGL Support, Device Motion Events, and so much more. Let’s start with WebGL Support
As most of you probably know, WebGL is a standard Google and a number of open web advocates are trying to push as the 3D/2D rendering standard on the web. Prior, that didn’t do you much good on Android as WebGL was not supported in Chrome for Android. Well that’s all changed now. Google suggests trying out this web page which has a race car as a demo. But you can’t really try that just yet since the new version of Chrome Beta isn’t yet in the Play Store.
Google has also improved search by image. Before it was kind of a pain, so Google has implemented a brand-new way to do it. Simply, long-press on an image and then hit “search” in the resulting dialogue, which will then search for that image with your selected default search provider, which should be Google.
Additionally, Google has added some new gestures. Before this new beta, the gestures in Chrome were kinda “janky”. Now they are much better, you can now use a more natural gesture to switch tabs, instead of the edge-swiping of before. You can also swipe left to right inside the URL bar area up top. Want to reveal the tab interface? Simply pull down the URL bar.
Google has added much more, probably even more that we haven’t found yet. So if you notice anything new in this new beta, be sure to leave us a comment below. The new update should be heading to the Play Store soon. In the meantime, if you come across an APK, be sure to send it in.
