This is something I’ve been wondering over the past few weeks. What’s next after 1080p? I know there’s 2560×1440, and 2560×1500 which is what is on the Nexus 10 and the Chromebook Pixel. This evening, LG sent out a press release where they just unwrapped the first QHD which is Quad High Definition, not the qHD we know and hate, display which is a 5.5-inch 2560×1440 resolution. LG is saying that the panel is about 1.21mm thick and has a minimum bezel of just 1.2mm. Man LG is really obsessed with small bezels as of late.
This new display is about 12% thinner compared to the 5.2-inch display they showed off on the G2 earlier this month. The panel is also much brighter, and checking in at 430 nits. For those of you wondering, this puts the pixels per inch at 538ppi. Now if you can see pixels on this display, you must have amazing eye sight, since I can’t see them on 300+ ppi displays.
The big question is, is the world ready for a display with this many pixels? Probably not. The real question is, will my battery be able to power this all day? Well if existing batteries can’t keep our phones going all day at 1920×1080 resolutions, then I doubt it’ll be able to do the same for the 2560×1440. I still think LG and others need to be working on better battery consumption and technology. And I know I’m not alone here. I’d love to see a battery around 2100mAh be able to keep a device with a 2560×1440 resolution display going all day, but I just can’t see that happening. Not with how Android and the processors use battery right now.
I’ve been wondering what’s next for the Nexus 10, well this didn’t really answer that. But perhaps we’ll see more displays like the Nexus 10 on devices coming up in the next few months and into 2014. LG really has me excited for their future devices. I think I can get over their “ugly” user interface to use a display with that many pixels. How about the rest of you?
