We’ve gotten a few mentions on Twitter over the past 24-48 hours about this, so we figured we’d put together a post and see who else is having problems. It appears that the new Nexus 7, or the Nexus 7 (2013) is having issues with random freezing and rebooting. At least according to this thread on Google’s Product Forums. Of course, the original poster was asked to try it in safe mode, and they are still getting random reboots, as often as twice a day. So right now we’re hearing that customers are urged to return their Nexus 7 (2013)’s to the place they purchased it, if it does randomly reboot in safe mode.
It seems like from at least a few people, the random reboots happen after their brand new tablet reboots from playing games. Which if it’s rebooting from overheating, then we have an even bigger problem. My Nexus 4 gets pretty hot when it’s wirelessly charging, but it’s never rebooted because it was too hot. Which means the Nexus 7 is getting pretty hot, at least 120 fahrenheit or hotter.
I haven’t had any problems with my new Nexus 7, and I’ve had mine for about a week now. It seems that everyone that’s having issues bought theirs in July. I bought mine on August 1st, so perhaps it was part of a newer batch. My Nexus 7 has never rebooted on it’s own, aside from applying those system updates right out of the box. I’m hoping Google can get to the bottom of this and push out a software update if that is indeed the correct fix for this issue. And if it’s a hardware issue, hopefully Google will replace everyone’s Nexus 7 that’s having issues. Either way, I expect Google to fix it rather soon. The thread over on Google’s Product Forums is getting pretty long, and I’m sure it’ll get even longer once the Nexus 7 (2013) becomes available in more regions in the world.
How many of our readers have been having issues with their new Nexus 7 randomly rebooting or freezing? Aside from the Netflix app, we already knew about that issue. Let us know in the comments down below.
