The Moto X has been a long time coming and now, the device is available from both AT&T and Verizon in the US. Other parts of the world however, have been left waiting to see if they’re going to get the Moto X, or even a taste of this new Motorola. While the company did tease that a more affordable version of the device could be coming to developing markets, like those found in Asia, we haven’t heard anything since. That is, until now. As Engadget is reporting, there’s a leaked image of what appears to be removable backs that look just like the design found on the rear of the Moto X.
While the Moto Maker is now available through AT&T, there’s no plans for this sort of service to be offered outside of the US. Which is understandable considering the devices are assembled in the US, and meant for the home market. The pastel colors in the above shot could mean that users of a Moto X-like phone in the Far East might not have to go through something like the Moto Maker to get a unique device.
Often, devices make their way East with removable back plates to get access at dual-SIM slots and often a microSD card slot. This leak could be showing us Moto’s attempt at solving two problems at once. Offering a wide range of colors and backings would allow them to offer something similar to the customization we have here in the US and offer dual-SIM devices.
Aside from the leaked image, there’s very little info to go on right now but, this could be a good move for Motorola. China and the surrounding region is one of the biggest smartphone markets in the world and selling mid-range devices at a low price seems to be the way to make money there. If Motorola can offer something similar to the experience of the Moto X, for a fraction of the price, they could very well achieve success on a global scale.
