Just last week, we heard about the Motorola Skip, which is an accessory for the Moto X. The Skip basically unlocks your phone via NFC, and is truly for those that don’t want to physically unlock their phone. The Motorola Skip basically sits on your waist above your pocket, so when you pull your phone out it taps the Skip and via NFC unlocks your device. It’s pretty cool sounding. But I wonder how well it’ll work in real life. The clip does allow you to bypass your pattern or PIN lockscreen. The accessory is exclusive to the Moto X, so it won’t work on the DROID Ultra, DROID Maxx or DROID Mini, unfortunately.
The Motorola Skip Setup app literally is just an app to get your Skip paired and setup with your phone. Of course, your Skip is going to need to know how to unlock your phone, so just like with regular NFC tags, you need to pair them up with your device and write to them. Nothing too difficult.
So to setup your Motorola Skip and Skip dots, you’ll need to download the app, make sure that NFC is enabled, tap your Skip or Skip dot to the back of your Moto X and simply follow the on screen instructions. It’s literally just that simple. Of course it’s only going to work with the Moto X, so I don’t see this app being very popular in the Play Store, It’s also pretty small in size, weighing in at just 238k. What’s interesting though is that it’s version 20.0, but has been installed 100-500 times already. Which is also surprising since the Moto X is only available in Canada right now.
Like I’ve said already, the Moto Skip is an interesting accessory. But I’m not sure how great it’s going to be in real life. Especially for those that just swipe to unlock their phones already. I know I often have trouble getting NFC tags to work well with my devices. I have one on my desk, which when I sit my phone down on it turns on Bluetooth (and connects to my speaker) then starts playing my playlist from Google Music. And it sometimes takes a little while for it to work correctly. So let’s see how well it works, how many of you are going to pick one up?
