Whenever Samsung introduces a new Exynos processor, we can always expect this next generation to be faster and easier on battery life because it is a prime concern with a mobile device. When the new Exynos model 5420 was recently announced, we knew little about it until now, as Samsung has finally taken the wraps off this impressive processor and sharing that information with us.
There have always been trade-offs with performance vs. battery life, and while the all new Exynos 5420 Octa and ARM’s big.LITTLE are striving for power, they provide it only when needed. Thanks to its six-core Mali-T628 GPU, it has “more than twice” the graphic capabilities than its predecessor, the 5410, and supports a range of APIs including OpenGL ES 3.0 (and 2.0), Renderscript, GPU Compute, and OpenCL.
These relationships will give the Exynos 5420 advantages in video and image stabilization, editing, facial detection, and even “eyes open” detection. This opens up the door for video/picture editing directly on the mobile device without having to go home and upload images to your PC. Facial detection adds enhanced security, and smile and eyes open detection means your photo will be taken only when everybody is smiling and looking at the camera.
The new Exynos 5420 features four 1.8GHz ARM Cortex-A15 cores and four 1.3GHz Cortex-A7 cores. With all of this computing power, Samsung claims a 20-percent increase in CPU performance, but a 70-percent greater energy efficiency than using Cortex-A15 cores alone. The system design switches between the cores depending on the power demands to give you the most processing power when you need it, without a lot of power consumption.
If you are an avid gamer and require complex graphics, the power is there. Not into gaming, you will still notice the power increase with faster loading website pages with better graphics. For Photoshoppers and Instagram users the Exynos 5420 also features Mobile Image Compression (MIC) that lowers the power it takes to load pictures from you gallery to your screen, extending your mobile experience.
