Android App of the Week: Speedtest.net

I know, I know, this isn’t a new app and it’s probably one of the most popular apps on the Play Store. But the reason why we are featuring it this week is because it got a huge UI update yesterday. Months ago the iOS version got this update and it took Ookla quite a while to get the Android version updated, which version 3.0 launched just yesterday. I also did some hands on with the app, and it performs pretty well.

As far as features go, you can test your network speed as well as sharing your results, viewing all your results. You can also change from mb/s or kb/s. Which is nice to see. You can also change which server you’re using to test your speed. As far as speeds go, you’ve got the Ping, download and upload speeds shown.

There’s not a whole lot to say about the app, but the fact that it looks 100-times better than the old version. It’s also not as laggy or glitchy either. So if you’re looking to test the speed of your connection, whether it’s 3G, HSPA+, LTE, or WiFi. This is one of the tools that we use to check out the speeds on test devices we get, since each device uses a different radio, it’s interesting to see what device gets the fastest speeds.

There are plenty of other speed test apps out there, but this is the most used one. It’s also the most usable one, as some of the others aren’t accurate and constantly crash. It is free in the Play Store and is pretty big, around 12MB. It’s also passed the 10 million installs mark, and quickly on its way to the 50 million mark. It’s compatible with Android 2.2 and up so just about everyone can check this one out.
