Android Headliner: Why the Nano SIM Requirement for Android 4.4 Rumor Makes Zero Sense

Just a little while ago, a very interesting rumor started making the rounds, which of course we reported on as we always do. It had to do with Android 4.4 and the fact that Android 4.4 KitKat will be requiring nano SIMs. Yes you read that right, requiring a nano SIM. It makes no sense at all. Why? Well we’re about to tell you exactly why it makes no sense.

One thing that has been asked of Google for quite some time is putting a stop to fragmentation. Honestly, fragmentation is never going away. Simply because there are too many OEMs putting out Android hardware with different processors, RAM, etc., not to mention the skins on board. But Google has worked hard the past few years to help eliminate fragmentation, at least a little bit. For instance, Android 4.3 was announced in July and started rolling out to the Nexus line throughout August. Here we are at the end of September, and most of the HTC One’s already have Android 4.3. Now if this were a couple years ago, it would be no where in sight. Then there’s also the fact that Google has broken out many of their apps into the Play Store to update via the Play Store and not a software update. As well as adding many features into Google Play Services, which is auto-updated from the Play Store.

So after Google has gone to all this trouble to help eliminate fragmentation, at least a little bit, why would Google take a step backwords and only make nano SIM devices compatible with Android 4.4? That would mean only the Nexus 5, Moto X, DROID Ultra, DROID Mini and DROID Maxx would get Android 4.4. Makes sense right? No it doesn’t.

Additionally, a few people brought this point up on Google+, the OS doesn’t care what kind of SIM is in your phone, as Android 4.2 supports nano, micro, mini and regular sized SIMs. For example, the Moto X, DROID Ultra, DROID Mini and DROID Maxx already run Android 4.2 and use nano SIMs.

So basically I’m calling bs on this rumor. As we see many rumors for the Nexus season, we see plenty of them that are definitely not true, and I have a feeling that this one is one of those that’s definitely not true. What do all of you think? Could this possibly be true?
