LG Announces a September Global Rollout for G2 Starting in the U.S. and Germany

This is the phone many users have been waiting for, and today the President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company (can you imagine what the door to his office must look like), Dr. Jong-seok Park said:

The positive market feedback after the initial launch in Korea proved to us that the LG G2’s consumer-oriented innovation does resonate with customers. The LG G2 was developed as a global device for a global audience, beyond the scope of any smartphone we’ve introduced to date. I’m confident consumers will see the difference.

Now we must wait and see if the U.S. launch will garner the excitement and match the reception that the Korean market gave the LG G2. LG claims that the features offered in their new flagship, G2, are based on LG’s “in-depth research of consumer lifestyles and behaviors.” They even include the rather unorthodox placement of the rear-mounted volume control – I am not sure that position is one that consumers will be comfortable with, but we will see. LG is also proud that the G2 will be the first smartphone launching worldwide that will included the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor. Apparently the choice of the display size of 5.2-inches was also derived from their “in-depth” survey, which is fine for me, but many consumers may feel that is too large for them to carry comfortably.

Also highlighted in LG’s press release – the camera on the G2 is 13MP and equipped with an Optical Image Stabilizer (OIS) to help capture images in motion or low light, as well as 1080 videos at 60 frames per second (fps). The G2 will offer “studio-like” sound quality with its 24bit/192kHz Hi-Fi playback.

Some of the powerful hardware features offered on the G2 are:

  • Answer Me automatically answers the call after lowering the ringtone when the phone is raised to one’s ear.
  • Plug & Pop automatically recommends options that are most likely to be used when a headset or USB cable is detected.
  • QuickRemote gives the LG G2 the ability to remotely control all IR devices including TV, Home theater, Air Conditioner, Stereo etc. as well as learn from conventional remotes and can be customized to operate multiple devices with flexible layouts and keys.
  • Guest Mode protects owner’s privacy by displaying only pre-selected apps when guests access the phone with a secondary unlock pattern.

No specific dates in September were mentioned, but with confirmation that all four major U.S. carriers will sell the LG G2, let’s hope that the device will show up about the same time…are you listening Verizon!
