Rumor: HTC One "Refresh" With Octa-Core CPU and 3GB of RAM In The Works

When we reviewed the One, we found the 1.7 Ghz Snapdragon 600 to be more than adequate however, with the Snapdragon 800 and its dizzying speeds upwards of 2.0 Ghz, on paper the One is getting left behind somewhat. Of course, in real-life use the One is still a fast device. It’s with no surprise then, that rumors of a “refresh” of the One have started circling. After all, this is something HTC have been doing for some time, there was the Sensation and the Sensation XE and last year we saw the One X and the One X+. Could we see a One+ before the year is out?

As Unwired View is reporting, there’s an image of what appears to a device profile from an HTC One doing the rounds. One which clearly states that the device is running an Octa-Core CPU. Screenshots like this are easily faked and an Octa-Core sounds a little like overkill even for HTC.

Forget about the 3GB of RAM thing for a minute here, just where is HTC going to get this Octa-Core CPU from? We can hardly imagine Samsung willing to sell them CPUs they surely want to be using in their own devices and the only other manufacturer out there is MediaTek. A company that not only doesn’t hold the same sort of prestige as “Snapdragon”, “Tegra” or “Exynos” but also a company that we don’t hear HTC working with very often. Also, we’d be surprised if HTC were to launch a refreshed version of the One with an Octa-Core CPU inside when there’s little proof that such processors have a dramatic effect on device performance.

Overall though, a refreshed One sounds like something HTC would do. They’ve done such things before in the past and maybe this is a way for them to generate a little buzz this holiday season. With the One Mini proving hard to get hold of however, this is a rumor to take with a side helping of salt.
